Restylane® Frequently Asked Questions:
What is a Restylane injection?

In simple terms, Restylane is a filler. It is injected into the skin to replace Hyaluronic Acid has disipated over time. Q-Med has 3 different types of Hyaluronic Acid fillers; "Restylane", "Restylane Fine lines", and "Perlane". Each of these gels has a different consistency to work best for the type of area the doctor is working on.

Here's how Restylane works.

Your skin is made of two layers, with supporting columns holding them apart. The area in-between includes the clear-jelly like substance Hyaluronic Acid. While young, the Hyaluronic acid is in abundance. As you grow older, the acid between these layers diminishes, and the skin somewhat caves, causing a wrinkle along the line. The wrinkle would be gone if you filled that area back up with the Hyaluronic Acid jelly-like substance. That's where Restylane come in.

The Restylane is injected into the skin with a very thin needle. It is injected into this area, and restores the natural volumes underneath the wrinkle. The wrinkle is now lifted up and smoothed out. All of this takes about 30 minutes, leaves no marks or scars, and the results can be seen immediately.

Depending on the results you'd like, you can discuss maintenance with your doctor and the period between injections. Follow up injections typically need less Restylane to achieve the results you want. Time between injections is typically 6 to 12 months.

What is a "Restylane Treatment"?

A Restylane treatment is the actual administering of the Restylane product. A treatment consists of a clear gel being injected into the skin with a very thin needle.

What is Hyaluronic acid?

All living organisms have Hyaluronic Acid in their bodies. In humans this is the substance that creates volume in ones face, giving it a healthy, young appearance. You can imagine what Hyaluronic acid does for a face when you consider the rounded face of a child, which forms into adulthood, and eventually recedes toward the skull causing furrow lines. When these are augmented by Restylane, this crystal clear Hyaluronic acid combines with your own to revitalize the face.
What about pre tests?

There are no pretests! Some biodegradable implants require a test because they have been extracted by animals, but Restylane is not, and therefore there is no risk of allergic reaction.

Technically Speaking...

Hyaluronic Acid was identified as "glycosaminoglycan (GAG)" approximately 60 years ago from vitreous humor. The Greek word "glass" (hyalos) is the source of the "Hyaluronic acid" name. This name was chosen for Hyaluronic Acid's glassy appearance.

Where is Hyaluronic Acid in the body?

The upper layers of skin are supported by two major columns made up of collagen and Elastin. These two substances make up connective tissue, and the spaces created are filled with a combination of Hyaluronic Acid, water, and protein complexes. This area is normally used for the transportation of essential nutrients from the bloodstream to the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid is found in great quantities in young skin and the sinovial fluids of both humans and animals. Unfortunately pollutants and sunlight break down the Hyaluronic acid over time by creating oxy radicals. Studies say that by the age of 50 you will have approximately half the Hyaluronic Acid of childhood.
You might know Hyaluronic Acid from its use with Vitamin C, because it allows Vitamin C to penetrate more efficiently.

Where Can Restylane Be Used?

Hyaluronic acid implantation can be used to improve the skin's contour and reduce depressions in the skin due to scars, injury or lines. The Hyaluronic family of fillers offered by Q-Med come in the different forms: Restylane, Restylane Fine Lines, and Perlane.

• Cheek depressions
• Redefining lip border
• Acne scars
• Some facial scars

Restylane and Side Effects

While Restylane enjoys a low number of side effects, here are of the more common side effects that might occur with a relatively small number of patients.

Common Injection related Side Effects

After receiving a Restylane Injection some common side effects may be pain, redness, swelling, itching, discoloration, and tenderness at the point of injection. These side effects typically subside within two days of the Restylane injection procedure.

Rare Restylane Side Effects

While more severe reactions occur in only 1 of 2000 patients on average, some have experienced localized swelling at the injection point, thought to be brought on by hypersensitivity.Tenderness, redness, and very rarely acne-like formations have appeared.

Reactions can typically occur only a few days after the injection, or as long as four weeks. When a reaction does occur, its average lifespan is only a few weeks, and is typically described as moderate and mild.

Is there any Restylane Danger?

There is typically very little danger from a Restylane Injection treatment.

While Restylane enjoys a low number of side effects, here are of the more common side effects that might occur with a relatively small number of patients. Much of the low number of side effects can be attributed to restylanes composition of Hyaluronic Acid. Learn more about Hyaluronic acid and its history here.
