Fighting Flu Season By Dr. Tami
As the seasons change and temperatures start getting cooler, it's always a reminder that flu season might be falling upon us. The best way to fight the flu is to prevent the flu. To protect yourself, maintain adequate levels of Vitamin D, keep hydrated and get plenty of rest.
And of course have lots of chicken soup available.
Death from flu usually comes from a secondary pneumonia not from the flu itself. You must stay away from all over the counter and prescription Acid Reducing Pharmaceuticals Tums®, Rolaids®, Zantac®, Tagamet® as these my cause diarrhea or constipation. Also avoid taking the more dangerous, PPIs [Proton Pump Inhibitors] such as Nexium®, Prevacid®, Prilosec®, and Protonics® as they may cause a rebound effect after use and stomach acid may return worse than before.
Preventing Flu:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
- If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Keep away from others as much as possible. This is to keep from making others sick.
- While sick, limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

Sun Damage
The sun's rays consist of ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays. UVA and UVB rays damage your skin and may lead to early wrinkles, skin cancer and other skin problems. If you are one of many people who spent a little too much time in the sun this summer, you might consider the following sun damage treatments to help repair your skin:
- Retin A: Retin-A was introduced to treat acne more than 30 years ago. While the medication produced remarkable results fighting acne, patients also noticed significant improvements in their overall facial appearance. As a result, Retin-A was approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. Retin-A is the trademark for a compound containing retinoic acid and the active ingredient tretinoin. There are numerous medications containing Retin-A on the market.
- Antioxidants Vitamin C & E: Oxidative stress (primarily caused by sun exposure) damages the skin's support formation, the collagen matrix, Vitamin C and E, fights oxidative pressure and helps cells mend prior damage. When applied to the skin, antioxidants can lower the appearance of wrinkles and skin discoloration, and enhance skin vivacity.

Retin-A
Retin-A first gained recognition as an acne treatment nearly 20 years ago. Soon thereafter, users began to notice improvements to skin texture, diminished wrinkles and brown spots. Since then, numerous studies have confirmed Retin-A's anti-aging benefits and today the powerful medication is typically used for the following reasons:
- Acne: Retin-A brings acne plugs (blockages) to the surface causing blackheads to be dislocated. The blackheads are then discarded from the skin during cleansing. Retin-A can help control acne breakouts as well.
- Hyperpigmentation: The ingredients in Retin-A can help sun-damaged skin, including age discoloration spots and light freckling.
- Poor Skin Texture: The increased exfoliation process from Retin-A removes dead cells and stimulates new skin cells to improve the texture of the skin.
- Preparation for Other Procedures: Retin-A is commonly used to prepare the skin for procedures such as laser skin resurfacing and facial surgeries. The medication may be continued after a procedure to assist in recovery as well.
