Intense pulsed light (IPL) pulses are directed at the pigmented spots. The IPL uses a particular wavelength that is attracted to the type of pigment(s) present while ensuring that surrounding tissue is safe. IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) also reduces the appearance of large pores and subtly stimulates collagen production for a firmer facial appearance. Results are unique to each individual depending on several factors including skin tone and the extent pigmented lesions.
Dr. Tami’s extensive research has shown that optimal results can be achieved with fewer treatments (3) when preparing the skin using Vitality’s Home Conditioning program and utilizing lunch-time peels to exfoliate the skin and reveal the pigment for the laser to treat. IPL treatments alone traditionally take up to 6 treatments for optimal results. Treatments should be performed every 3-4 weeks in order to accurately assess progress, and adjust settings as necessary. The procedure is not painful and has been described as feeling similar to an elastic band being snapped against the skin. Many options to ensure your comfort are utilized at Vitality including numbing creams and ice.
Immediately after treatment, each spot may turn slightly darker. The area many be slightly red and puffy and sometimes itchy. This reaction subsides quickly making it possible to return to normal activities immediately. The use of UVA and UVB sunscreen is strongly recommended.
Most brown spots on the skin are caused by sunlight, UV radiation or aging changes. If the brown spots create a patch or larger area of pigment, this may indicate melasma.
